4th Grade

Fourth grade acts as a bridge between the early elementary years and the upper grades, helping students develop a strong foundation in core subjects and critical skills. It aims to foster a love for learning, encourage curiosity, and prepare students for the increased academic challenges they will face in the later stages of their education.

Curriculum

Literacy

Open court reading uses strong emphasis on foundational skills including:

  • Spelling

  • Phonics

  • Decoding

Students will participate in read alouds and class discussions. Reading and responding skills include:

  • Building background knowledge

  • Vocabulary

  • Fluency

  • Comprehension

  • Critical Thinking

Open court reading also includes various language arts skills include:

  • Development of Writing

  • Penmanship

  • Grammar Usage

Science
TWIG science taps into the exploratory nature of students, engages them in learning that feels like play, and encourages them to keep discovering. Twig science uses hands on investigations and experiments. Twig science ensures all students develop and understanding in science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and cross cutting concepts such as cause and effect, structure understanding and patterns.

Mathematics
Reveal Math uses word problem skills and different strategies to solve problems.
The curriculum focuses on both inquiry-focused and teacher-guided instructional strategies with each lesson. Students have the chance to practice on their own from their learning and skills.

Social Studies
Impact Social Studies helps students gain building blocks for critical thinking, develop a strong reading and writing foundation, and learn what it means to be a responsible and active citizen. Note taking and projects allow students to practice writing, comprehension, and presentation skills. There are 3 resources for the students to utilize while going through the social studies curriculum such as the inquiry journal which allows students to analyze images, use closed reading strategies to evaluate sources, and write opinions citing evidence siting their investigations, the research companions that allows students to deepen their knowledge and understand the chapter content guided by essential questions and the explorer magazine which helps students dig deeper into chapter content.

Specials

Art
Students use elements and principles of art, observation and prior knowledge, art
vocabulary, ideas from culture and history, learn about artists and their famous
artwork, to convey meaning and awareness in their own works of art.


Robotics
Students explore robotics using Dash robots. Coding, movement, obstacles,
constructing, teamwork.

 
Physical Education:
Movement, safety rules and procedures, protecting body, warm-up and cool-down techniques, hydration importance, offensive and defensive tactics, muscle strength during specific movements, stretching, service size, physical goals and accomplishments, technology, mental/emotional, physical, and social health.

Library
Provide access to a broad range of literature and informational reading
materials. Strategies and skills are reinforced to meet the needs of learners at
each developmental stage. Skills and concepts taught in the classroom are
reinforced during this time. Students select accelerated reader books to read at
home and read during library time.

Media
Students gain access to computer skills. Practice using a keyboard, mouse, and
learn to navigate computer resources. Students in 4th grade are also introduced
to creating a yearbook, learn design and photography skills.
