5th Grade

Fifth grade is a significant year for students as they build on their academic foundation, cultivate critical skills, and prepare for the challenges of middle school and beyond. The goal is to foster well-rounded, independent learners who are equipped with essential knowledge and skills for future success.

Curriculum

Language Arts

Open Court Reading uses strong emphasis on foundational skills (spelling, phonics, word analysis, oral language development), reading and responding (comprehension, close reading, fluency, discussion, answering questions, vocabulary, thinking), and language arts (writing and grammar usage). Projects at the end of each lesson allow students to use their comprehension and learning skills as review.

Math

Reveal Math uses word problem skills and different strategies to solve problems. The curriculum focuses on both inquiry-focused and teacher-guided instructional strategies with each lesson. Students have the chance to practice on their own from their learning and skills. Students focus on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Social Studies

Impact Social Studies helps students gain building blocks for critical thinking, develop a strong reading and writing foundation, and learn about North America before the founding of the United States as well as the first several decades of the republic. By engaging with diverse perspectives and primary sources, students build an understanding of the cooperation and conflicts that defined the early nation. The curriculum provides students with different learning resources, inquiry journal, research companion, and the explorer magazine. Note taking and projects allow students to practice writing, comprehension, and presentation skills.

Science

Twig Science uses hands-on investigations and experiments; students work as a team. Ensures all students have an interwoven understanding of science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts.
